First of all, if you are from America then you need to be aware that in Europe most of the rental cars use manual transmission, so if you haven’t used this type of car before you should make sure you that you practice a bit before you go to avoid embarrassment. You can ask for automatic but the chances of them having one available are quite slim, so be prepared.

Do I need car insurance?

I can’t use personal experience for this one, but I have been told that there are companies that accept debit cards in Spain for car rental, but many don’t. You should definitely check this before you visit to be on the safe side. Some will also accept cash and even cheques in a small minority, but before you go it is vital that you make sure there are companies that do this from your airport if you are going to get the hire car when you are out in Spain.

Can I rent a car at any age?

This may vary between companies, but in most cases you need to have at least a year’s driving experience. Some companies will also require a minimum age, so make sure you read the small print to find out what that is before hiring a car.
